Random Stories

Hugo had this past Saturday off from work. We decided to spend the day with his mom and brother. We all went to this fabulous park - it was beautiful! We walked along a path that took us by beautiful trees and flowers. Every once in a while we would come upon a playground. Rodrigo would play for a bit and then we weould move on to the next spot. Hugo said the park is at least 40 years old. All the play equipment has been around all that time because it's all made of concrete. One of the playgrounds had these huge slides. Hugo and I both tried to go down the slides with Rodrigo, but our rear-ends were a bit too large! :)

Jack, the gecko, has apparently told his entire family about our fabulous house. We must have the most popular house in town and all the coolest geckos want to hang out with us. One of the geckos who has recently stopped by to visit (several times, mind you) has a deformity...he has lost his tail. I feel kind of bad for the guy, but I find his appearance quite amusing. It kind of looks like he has two heads. When he runs, it looks like he is running backwards!

I bought a new pillow yesterday. That fact on its own isn't too amusing. But when I tell you I bought it in a grocery store, it seems a bit more unusual, don't you think? It was on the same aisle as men's underwear, shower curtians, baby shoes and hair dye.

I survived my first earthquake! I've never felt an earthquake before. I guess there was a pretty bad one when I was visiting once, but I slept through it. This time, I grabbed my cell phone and passport (two things an international can't be without in an emergency) and ran outside. Everyone else in the neighborhood hadn't even flinched at the rumble. I told Hugo about the quake when he got home. It reminded him of a story. In 2001, there were a lot of earthquakes here in El Salvador. His grandma's house wasn't the most structurally sound building, so the family decided to sleep outside...for TWO months! Each night, they moved the dining table off the porch to make room for them to sleep side-by-side. Hugo's grandma's sister lived close by and was also worried about her family's safety during the earthquakes. So, she brought her family down to Herminia's (Hugo's grandma) house to sleep on their porch too. There were 11 people sleeping in sleeping bags, outside, for two months. Wouldn't that have been a sight to see?
