Sorry I haven't written in awhile. I've been a bit distracted lately!
Awhile back, one of the girls from the cyber cafe approached me and asked if I would teach her English. I agreed. I wasn't doing much at the time and figured I could use a project. Well, her sister was interested in taking the class too. And her friend. And her cousin. Then my neighbor found out about the class and wanted to come. Before long, I had seven students! We agreed to meet twice a week...Tuesday and Thursday. I figured a class would last about an hour, maybe an hour and a half. Boy...was I wrong! Those girls are chatty! We would study a little English, chat a litte, study a little English, chat a little...you get the idea. Pretty soon, I was spending two or three hours at the cyber cafe for "class." It was fun though. In addition to teaching everyone English, I had the opportunity to practice Spanish. I'll admit...those first couple of classes were a bit rough. I think we spent more time flipping through the Spanish-English dictionary than anything else. Plus, teaching English was difficult! I'd never really thought much about our language. Once I started breaking it down, it was much more complicated than I thought. I mean really...when was the last time you thought about conjuctions, present perfect tense, or superlatives?
But now, we are doing pretty well. The students seem to enjoy the class and are learning lots. In fact, I've started to teach a second group on Sturdays. And the best part is...the students are paying me. Granted, they only pay a dollar per lesson. But as Hugo would say, "something is something!"
