That's how we roll...

When I first moved here, we had to buy pretty much all the furniture for our house. We had a few things that were given to us by family members, but everything else was purchased. One thing we didn't rush out to buy was a sofa. We didn't want to completely drain our savings account the first week I was here. So for almost a year, we used a twin bed as a sofa. We got a bunch of pillows and it really wasn't too bad. But before the baby came, we decided it would be best to buy a sofa (and a chair or two). We decided to check out the consignment shop before rushing out and buying something new.

Our house is (obviously) very small. So we were very limited when it came to size and number of items we could purchase. We found a sofa and chair set that, although it had hideous upholstery, would fit in our house. So for $90, we were set!

Now the question was...how to get it home. I was all for the idea of paying the delivery guy from the store $25 to shelp it across town for us. Hugo, on the other hand, didn't like that idea. He kept saying we could get it home in our car. At first I thought he was joking. But when he persisted, I realized he was serious. As the man of the house and the native of this country, I deferred to his judgement. If he thought we could get it home in the car...fine. I told him he could do whatever he wanted, but I wanted to go on the record as saying it was a bad idea and I wouldn't be responsible if it all when wrong!

So...here is what happened. Hugo pulled the car up to the loading dock of the store. He and another guy tossed the sofa on the roof of the car. Hugo went down to a street vendor and bought some rope to tie it down. Then, he put the chair in the trunk (kind of).

Where was I during all of this? Standing there, shaking my head...pretty embarrassed. We were making quite a scene. I was huge pregnant, so of course cars were already slowing down to look at the a) white woman and b) the big, fat white woman. Once they got over the shock of me, they immediately started laughing at the monkey-man climbing around, trying to put a sofa in/on a car.

But...it worked. We managed to get all the way home WITHOUT a traffic ticket (because it is illegal to haul stuff on the roof of a car) and WITH the furniture!

Look how proud Hugo is of himself! :) And...the little green chair, Susan (peaking out the door), my friend Lucy, and I all went into the car too!
